How to Fit a Light in a Conservatory
Fitting conservatory lighting can seem like a daunting task if you aren't sure how to do it. This is an issue only amplified by the knowledge that the type of lighting available to you depends on the type of conservatory you have, the shape of your conservatory roof, and how much lighting you actually want.
So here at Arrow Electrical, we've put together this handy blog post detailing all the ways you can fit lighting inside your conservatory, for those times when the natural light just won't cut it.
Lamps
If you predominantly use your conservatory for relaxing, such as evening reading or doing hobbies after work, then a lamp or two may suffice.
If this is the case, table lamps or floor lamps can easily be fitted into the room by plugging them into a nearby open socket - just the same as any other room in the house.
Depending on whether or not you have a glass conservatory (if you do, this likely isn't applicable to you) you may also be able to install wall lamps. To do so, wiring must be fed safely and discreetly to the installation point. If a pre-existing wire network is not already installed, you may want to invest in an electrician to do so unless you have experience in similar jobs already.
LED lighting
If you want wired LED lighting, you will, again, need a pre-existing wiring system in place. However, one of the advantages of opting for LED lighting strips is that you can also buy battery-operated variations that can simply be stuck on anywhere.
This is ideal for those conservatories that have glass walls or limited spaces that don't allow for bulkier lighting; LED lighting strips are thin and can be trimmed down to size to light up even the smallest of areas, meaning you can be efficient with your placements.
LED lighting is also minimal fuss and low-cost, and can also be placed under shelves, atop picture frames, or around skirting boards for a more subtle atmosphere.
Pendant lighting
More commonly known as a conservatory ceiling light, pendant lighting is only fittable in a conservatory if you already have the pre-existing wiring in place. It's not possible to internally fit new wiring down yourself without disrupting and probably damaging your conservatory's foundations or walls.
You should always contact an electrician with conservatory lighting experience if you do decide to fit new wiring.
However, if you do already have wiring installed in your conservatory, you can fit lights easily and quickly by yourself. Just simply fit the right type of lightbulb in as you would with any other pendant lighting; from there, you can either leave the bulb uncovered for a more hip and industrial vibe - or choose and fit a light shade that compliments the ambience of your space.
